Thought Balloon: Marvelous News!

Victor Von Doom is the Infamous Iron Man by Alex Maleev

The truth is lately, well actually in the past few years, I haven’t been reading that much from Marvel Comics. Oh, I enjoy the movies, but I don’t enjoy the ‘mainstream’ publisher’s need for events and crossovers every other month just to make sales. Marvel is the worst, as they are always ending series’ after a few issues in order to restart the same title with the All-New, All-Different header, but with the same creative team. It doesn’t make much sense to me. I get that we live in world where long standing series’ are done and that EVERY series gets restarted, and I don’t mind it, as long as when you do so, it’s accompanied by a status quo change or a new creative team. Marvel isn’t to only one guilty, DC does this as well, but they tend to reboot their entire line instead of one title at a time.

Once the Marvel title, Fantastic Four, was canceled, I was gone. The FF are my favorite team and heroes of the Marvel U and when they disappeared because of the movies, I was fed up! I’m still upset that the comics have to take an back seat to the movies, but that is where the money is made and it is what is keeping the comics alive, so I’ll put up with it. Recently, I did get into a new Marvel series, Weirdworld. I enjoyed the Secret Wars mini-series (mostly because it was self-contained) and the now canceled (I think, as no new issues have been solicited or released since issue #6) ongoing. The story added superheroes to a fantasy world with some technology and I loved it! The story was great, but the art is what drew me in…I was hooked! On a side note, Marvel, if you are reading this (which you aren’t), please release both Weirdworld series in your recently resurrected Treasury Edition! Anyway, while I was enjoying a new Marvel title, it wasn’t a traditional superhero story and didn’t connect to their main universe, and once the ongoing was ended, I was done once again.

That is until this week, when Marvel made several announcements about new ongoing titles. While the first Iron Man news got most of the attention, it was the new Iron Man title, Infamous Iron Man, that interested me the most. Doctor Doom as an Iron Man sounds very interesting and I can’t wait to see where this title goes and what happens to Doom because of it. The other title is Unworthy Thor, where the Odinson, which is the name Thor goes by now, ever since he became unworthy to lift his hammer and Jane Foster became Thor, wishes to see if he is worthy once more, but not by taking the hammer away from Jane, but tracking down the hammer of Ultimate Thor, who was killed during Secret Wars. This sounds awesome…the kind of stuff I love from comics, a hero traversing the unknown to reclaim his power and place in the world. I will definitely be picking up these two titles, when they release, and will hopefully be bringing you reviews once they are available.

So, are you excited by these new titles? Let me know and as a parting gift, the Unworthy Thor promotional cover, enjoy!

Review: Loki, Agent of Asgard #6 (AXis)

Loki AoA #6Title: Loki, Agent of Asgard #6 (AXis)

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cost: $3.99

Storytellers: Al Ewing (writer) with Jorge Coelho (artist)

After the events of The Tenth Realm, Loki and Verity are trying to have some downtime and understand what’s been going on since the last actual issue of Loki. In the future, Dr. Doom has traveled to discover what happens to Latveria and finds his country in ruins, with the older Loki the only being there. Loki attacks, but Doom who returns to the present before any damage can be done. Doom wishes to stop Loki before things get worse, so he teleports the young Loki to his castle and battle the god. The battle rages on between the two villains, which the citizens of Latveria fight each other. Doom eventually gets the upper hand and traps Loki, but it’s revealed that Loki brought Verity to Doom’s castle, and the human is invisible.

It’s great to have Loki, Agent of Asgard back, but I’m upset that it’s return has to be attached to another Marvel event. This issue features a great battle between Loki and Doom, which makes up most of the story. All-in-all, this is a good issue and I can’t wait to see where things ultimately go and what role will Loki play in AXis!

Convention: Hero Bot Con 2013

Hero Bot Con 2013

DPH Games LogoToday was Hero Bot Con 2013…and it was amazing! I didn’t attend the convention as a guest, I was a vendor, selling the board game “Cache Me If You Can!” Even if I wasn’t a vendor, I would have gone and had a great time. It’s been a while since I’ve been to a comic convention, maybe a year, so It was great to see what everyone in the area had to offer. We sold a few board games (and a few plush dolls) and walked the convention floor, finding lots of goodies! Cash was tight and I had a table to run, so I didn’t get everything I wanted, but the things I did get are awesome!

Mighty Avengers #1Mighty Avengers #1

I wasn’t going to try this series out, only because it’s part of the Infinity event, but wanted it because Luke Cage is one of my favorite Marvel heroes…and they were only charging $2!

Green Arrow Volume 1 TPBGreen Arrow Volume 1- Midas Touch Paperback Collection

This is a collection that I’ve wanted for a while, but just never picked it up. Usually, when I was on the lookout for something new to read, there were other things I wanted to read. Also, it didn’t hurt that it was half off cover price, making it only $7!

Mr Fantastic and Dr Doom MinimatesMr Fantastic and Dr Doom Minimates OpenMister Fantastic and Doctor Doom Minimates

This is the first thing that I picked up, because I can’t pass up anything Fantastic Four! I have the original set of FF minimates, but this new Mr. Fantastic looks awesome and Dr. Doom comes with a Doombot head. A steal for only $8!

Stuff of Legend Omnibus One HCStuff of Legend Omnibus One Hardcover Collection

The absolute, hands down, best thing I purchased was the hardcover Stuff of Legend omnibus. I’ve already read, and reviewed, volume one and loved it, so this omnibus collects volumes one and two into one collection. The one of the writers of Stuff of Legend, Mike Raicht, was present at the convention and  signed and personalized my hardcover. Raicht is an awesome guy and I wish great things for him and his fellow creators on Stuff of Legend. This was my most expensive purchase, at $30, but was well worth it (and actually what I wanted to pick up at the con).
